How are you getting this 4k lb whale to sixty in low-six second times with just 241HP? Secret jet pack somewhere? Come on, merc. It’s one of the best sedans in the world, you don’t need to lie to us about how fast it is.

Those are peak power numbers. If the torque curve is flat you’ll have power through the entire engine range. Audi puts the A7 with the 3.0 V6 at sub-5 second 0-60, and that only has 333hp advertised.

Isn’t torque the more important figure? Don’t the Germans usually underrate how much power their cars make? What does the little asterisk say about the acceleration time?

bmw does this shit too. 6 seconds for a 320i which has 180 hp

That, and being German, there is a chance that that is at the wheels.

Took a bit of googling to find actual test numbers, but MT got 6.5 seconds with a 4matic car.

That seems to be a recent thing with forced induction engines. They definitely did not underrate the M54B30 engine in my E46. I’m thinking it had 225hp on a good day when new.

Man what I wouldn’t do to live in a world where you could get that kind of performance out of a ~3.7k lb car and just 180 or so HP. It would be heaven.

Gearing?

They list it at 6.7s. If you’re just looking at hp and weight to determine 0-60 times, you know very little about what goes into making a car accelerate. Gearing plays a huge role, and the fact these are cars with twin scroll turbos helps a lot as well. plus BMW is very conservative with their hp figures. A lot of people have found BMW listing WHP figures rather than crank figures.

I’m sure they underrate the shit out of these engines. That’s pretty nuts.

It’s called gearing and twin scroll turbos.

And faster modern transmissions, better traction control, tires getting magnificent in the last few years, etc.

Notice the little cross next to sec? I bet if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will find that that time is from the lightest option pack with the highest power engine.

I wouldn’t be wholly surprised if a) that power figure were understated, and b) that acceleration figure were close to accurate.

Pretty much everything but the Boostang seems to have underrated power numbers. Even the FiST supposedly has just over 200hp. Berger just dynoed the new B58, and apparently it makes around 330whp stock.

Magic? It could just be a good torque curve. If they managed to make my S600 get to 60 in under 4.5 seconds, then a smaller lighter car shouldn’t need much push to get there, especially taking newer transmission technologies into account.

Peak power isn’t everything.
It’s got a huge, flat torque curve and a fast-shifting nine speed automatic.
Car and Driver’s instrumented test with an E300 4Matic yielded 0-60 in 6.5.

I’ve driven an A6 with that engine, it is that fast 100%. Feels like 400 crank hp if I’m honest

They can’t put “YNMV” your numbers may vary below the MSRP sticker on the window though.
I don’t think its quite 4,000lbs, but I also agree that 6.2 seconds even with a turbocharger for that car isn’t the consistent number (but we could be wrong)

Ah right! I am waiting to see how fast the M140is are. They are the smallest, lightest cars to have that engine.

Big torque from like 1000 rpm and a flat curve. Forced induction can do interesting things.

If you look closely, Merc put a cross there to admit this will only happen on the day Jesus Christ is crucified.
For that, he will have to be rise from the dead and then be crucified by someone. So the chances are close to zero.
The chances of this 0-60 miracle drop even lower if Jesus returns as a Zombie, then how do you crucify someone that’s undead. Does that count as a crucifixion?
In either case, that Merc ain’t doin’ 60 in 6.2 seconds.
